ABOUT ME

After leaving the Instant Automatons in 1982, I was not involved in music - other than as a passive consumer - until the very beginning of the 21st century.

Inspired and intrigued by the technological advances in modern music-making, I then began creating and recording new material of my own and distributing it, firstly on CD, and then (much more conveniently) via digital downloads.
This site presents a fairly comprehensive summary of what I've been doing for the past twenty-odd years, reflecting both my solo work and a couple of the most productive collaborations with which I have been involved.

randomk/automata

The conception of this collaboration could arguably be traced back to the late 1970s, when Product of Reason and the Instant Automatons were forged in North Lincolnshire's crucible of lo-fi DIY creativity. From the ashes of those bands Richard RandomK and Mark Automaton have raised the phoenix that is randomk/automata.

"The experience of collaboration with Mark is not only a product of the actions involved, but also the time in my life at which it has occurred. As the years add up, the shackles of ego become looser, the awareness of opportunity an ever-widening aperture.
I feel like a cook whose pantry has been expanded exponentially; in other words, extremely lucky."

"Working on solo projects can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you have complete control, but equally it is useful to occasionally have someone say 'That sounds a bit crap - what if you did this instead...?'
That's really the core of how Richard and I work together. Collaboration comes in many different forms, and since the inception of randomk/automata, we have explored many of these avenues. It fosters learning and growth, and enriches the creative process and final product. Plus, I get to work with one of my favourite songwriters!"
